Two Top-10 Finishes for Canadian Ice Dancers at Youth Olympic Games

Gangwon, South Korea (January 30, 2024) – Canadian skaters wrapped up the individual competition portion of the 2024 Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea on Tuesday with two top-10 finishes in ice dance, and an 11th place for Kaiya Ruiter in women’s singles.

Audra Gans and Michael Boutsan from Prévost, Que., had the top Canadian finish of the day with a fifth-place in the ice dance competition. Their free skate, performed to music composed by three-time Olympic medallist Eric Radford, scored an 83.83 – a huge new personal best score for the team, giving them a new personal best total score of 136.82.

“This felt amazing. I felt really good on the ice, and everything went smoothly, and I really trusted my skating,” said Gans who made her ISU Junior Grand Prix debut earlier this season in Poland with Boutsan.

“I felt the elements were clean, and I felt it was a good skate and I felt I was able to perform a little bit and I hope the crowd and the judges saw that,” added Boutsan.

The second Canadian ice dance team of Caroline Kravets and Jacob Stark of Kitchener, Ont., set a new personal short program score of 47.98 on Sunday, and finished the competition in 9th position after scoring a 67.72 for the free skate (total score 115.70).

“This felt a lot more comfortable than the first day, it felt more like what we do at home, so it was really good to put out a performance that we’re happy with,” said Stark. “This competition has really taught us to reach for the stars. We weren’t expecting to be here at the beginning of the season – we felt like we were a long shot, but we made it happen and so this has taught us that we can achieve anything we want, as long as we work hard and train for it.”

Newly-minted Canadian senior women’s champion Kaiya Ruiter of Calgary, Alta., had a tougher skate today in her free program, finishing the competition in 11th position with a total score of 154.95. She had entered the day in sixth position after a fantastic short program, which saw her skating in the final group with the top skaters, but with one fall today, and some other jumps under-rotated, she wasn’t able to retain her top-10 position.

“There were certainly some highlights that I’m really proud of, and it wasn’t what I was hoping for, but I really enjoyed the experience and getting to compete on that Youth Olympic ice,” said Ruiter who cited skating in the last group as a real highlight of her time at the Games. “That was such a win for me. Getting to be part of that group of the most incredible girls in this skating world, was just incredible, and was an experience that I don’t think I’ll ever forget.”

The 2024 Youth Olympic Games figure skating competition will conclude on Thursday with the team competition where Canadian skaters will look to capture their first medal in this first edition of a non-mixed nations team competition.

Skate Canada’s Response to the ISU’s Statement Regarding the Awarding of Medals for the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games Figure Skating Team Competition

Skate Canada is extremely disappointed with the International Skating Union’s (ISU) position on the long-awaited awarding of medals for the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games Figure Skating Team Competition.

The Court for Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that in addition to a four-year ban from competition, the ban includes “the disqualification [of] all competitive results” achieved by Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva since the positive test. The ISU in its recent decision is not applying Rule 353, which states that “competitors having finished the competition and who initially placed lower than the disqualified competitor will move up accordingly in their placement.”

Skate Canada strongly disagrees with the ISU’s position on this matter and will consider all options to appeal this decision.

Pairs Gold for Behnke and Sauve at 2024 Youth Olympic Games

Gangwon, South Korea (January 29, 2024) – Annika Behnke and Kole Sauve made Canadian figure skating history on Monday at the 2024 Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea as they won Canada’s first-ever gold medal, and first-ever individual event medal at a Youth Olympic Games.

Behnke from Peace River, Alta., and Sauve of Grand Prairie, Alta., led throughout the competition, scoring a 39.09 for their short program on Saturday where despite falling on the element, they were the only team to attempt a throw triple loop.

Behnke had a small stumble at the very beginning of their free skate on Monday, but the pair recovered swiftly and performed flawlessly from then on to dominate the competition and score a 74.54 giving them a total score of 113.63. This was well ahead of the silver-medal winning team from the USA – Cayla Smith and Jared McPike (98.00), and the bronze medal team from Spain – Caroline Shan Campillo and Pau Vilella (94.03).

“It feels amazing, I’m really happy. I want to thank all my coaches who have helped me get this far,” said Behnke who together with Sauve were competing in front of their largest crowd ever at the Gangneung Ice Arena – scene of so much success for Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

When asked how they recovered after their stumble today, Sauve added: “We just took it one element at a time. After that happened and we got the twist done, we forgot about it. It’s a lot easier to have another person there with you, so they can bring you back up after a mistake.”

In the men’s singles competition, David Li from Richmond, B.C., skated a personal best free skate (118.57) to move up from 11th after the short program to finish 10th overall with a total score of 175.73.

“I think the free program, some of the jumps were a little bit shaky, but I’m happy to pull it out and I’m still working on my mental ability to correct things in the program,” said Li who was the junior men’s silver medallist at the 2024 Canadian National Skating Championships last month in Calgary.

Hyungyeom Kim from Korea thrilled his home country crowd to win the gold (216.73) while Adam Hagara from Slovakia took the silver (216.23), and Yanhao Li from New Zealand the bronze (208.84).

The ice dance and women’s singles competitions will wrap up on Tuesday with their free skates, and the team competition will conclude the figure skating competition at the Youth Olympic Games on Thursday.

The Little Club that Could – Minnedosa Skating Club Champions Inclusivity to Give Local Boy a New Way to Enjoy Skating

On January 1, 2022, eight-year-old Cain Burgess of Minnedosa, Manitoba, and his family received news that no one ever wants to receive. A lump that his family had noticed on his shin was revealed to be osteosarcoma, and thus began Cain’s journey with cancer.

Cain spent eight months away from home undergoing chemotherapy and multiple surgeries to remove his tibia bone and replace it with a bone graft and a cadaver bone. When he finally returned home, Cain was cancer free and eager to return to his normal life.

Before his cancer diagnosis, Cain had been a very active kid, playing hockey, rugby, biking, and hiking and so getting active again was paramount for his recovery. Despite being cancer free, Cain was still unable to put any weight on his leg, so his family was unsure of what he’d be able to do. Luckily, the family’s good friend, Jacquie Gerrard – President of the Minnedosa Skating Club – had recently seen a CanSkate poster that showed a young boy using a sledge to get out on the ice.

“I really didn’t know anything about sledging, but I contacted Skate Manitoba, and they put me in touch with Skate Canada and they were able to provide me with more information. In Manitoba, it’s mostly Sledge Hockey Manitoba who do the most with sledges, and they’re managed by Manitoba Possible. They were able to get Cain fitted with a sledge, and he brought it out to Minnedosa and he was able to start in our CanSkate program using a sledge which was really cool,” said Gerrard.

Being out on the ice on his sledge has had a very positive impact on Cain says his mother, Danica Wotton: “The social aspect of getting him back on the ice has been beneficial in so many ways. He’s not excluded, and it’s a way for him to take part and be with his friends, and he’s having fun and he’s exercising, which is a huge thing, because I really can’t find many activities for him with his leg not working.”

Cain was also lucky enough to meet and skate with Paralympic athlete Tyler McGregor in February 2023 when he was in Winnipeg for his “Sledge Skate of Hope” campaign. McGregor, who also had a form of bone cancer and lost his leg, discovered para ice hockey early on and is now the captain of Canada’s national para ice hockey team and widely recognized as one of the best players in the world.

“He and Cain went for a skate on the river together, just the two of them. They got to talk and had a lot in common. Tyler has had his struggles as well, so they were chatting and sledging, and it was really cool for Cain,” said his mother Danica.

Minnedosa is a small, rural town, near Brandon, Manitoba, with few opportunities for kids with different abilities to get involved in sport and recreation. After seeing the impact that sledge skating has had on Cain, Gerrard is working to create better access to the sport for other local skaters. She applied for a grant with the Minnedosa and District Foundation to purchase two additional sleds for the club.

“We just got those before Christmas, and together with our recreation department, they’re now available anytime we have public skating, or sticks and pucks – our whole community can use them and try them out. Anyone who’s tried it thinks it’s super fun,” said Gerrard.

Cain has become the resident expert on sledge skating in his town. He helped make some videos for the club about how to use them, how to get in them, and how to stop and will be helping to teach other kids that want to learn how to sledge through the club’s CanSkate programs.

“We’re just so thankful to the club,” said Wotton. “At the time that this was all going on, Cain was really struggling with a lot and having a lot of challenges with his chemo, and his treatment, and not being mobile, and they were in the background, doing all of this and taking the lead on it, which took a lot off our plate. They gave Cain this opportunity – we didn’t ask for it – they just did it, and we’re really grateful to them for thinking of him and doing their work towards making this inclusive activity out here in in a rural area setting where we don’t have these things.”

Les Suprêmes Synchronized Skating Team Win Gold at Budapest Cup

Budapest, Hungary (January 22, 2024) – The international synchronized skating season got started this weekend in Budapest, Hungary with the Budapest Cup, and the reigning world championship team, Les Suprêmes, from Saint-Léonard, Que., showed that they are still the team to beat by winning gold in the senior event.

The team had a good fight from the Haydenettes team from the USA – the American team was sitting in first following the short program, but their narrow lead was swallowed by the Les Suprêmes team in the free skate – leaving the Canadian team in first with a total overall score of 234.60, and the Americans in second with a total score of 232.73. The Helsinki Rockettes team from Finland captured the bronze with a total score of 229.03.

“We’re really with both of our skates. We’ve been working on our technical since nationals, and we’re really happy that we improved that. And overall, we just wanted to do exactly like we do in practice and have fun,” said team co-captain Olivia Di Giandomenico of their performances.

Team NEXXICE from Burlington, Ont., also had some really strong skates and finished in fifth place overall with a total score of 212.22.

“We’ve had a really amazing experience in Budapest. After nationals, where we had a couple of mistakes, we wanted to come out here and prove ourselves, and I think we did,” said NEXXICE co-captain Tegan Orr.

Her co-captain Taylor Johnston added: “We’ve made amazing progress with both programs over the past few weeks and we’ve been working really hard together to find that collaboration and really put those best programs out there.”

The Nova Juniors team from St-Hubert, Que., had the top canadian finish in the junior competition, finishing just off the podium in fourth with a total score of 183.33. The Golding Ice Junior team from Blainville, Que., finished sixth with a total score of 159.28. The Elite Junior team from the USA won gold with a total score of 202.22, while the Dream Edges Junior team (200.68) and Fintastic Junior team (200.39), both from Finland, took silver and bronze respectively.

“We felt really strong. We wanted to put out a performance that we could be proud of, and we really put our hearts into it,” said Nova team co-captain Jordan Campbell.

Next up for Canadian synchronized skaters is the Trophy D’Écosse taking place in Dumfries, Great Britain from January 26-27 where two junior teams – NEXXICE and Ignite Junior will be looking to climb onto the podium.
