Indigenous Engagement: Decolonization of Terminology
As Skate Canada continues its work in improving equity, diversity and inclusion in our sport, we changed our terminology for the steps identified as a Mohawk and Choctaw for all domestic applications. This revision works toward the decolonizing of our terminology and aligns with our commitment to anti-racism.
The new terms both correspond to the tracing on the ice that is left when these steps are performed. The terminology changes are:
- Mohawk to a C Step
- Choctaw to a S Step
The new terms are reflected in all our resources and will continue to work with our stakeholders to change this language in any previously published materials.
Skate Canada is committed to working with all members of our community to improve the state of our society and sport, so truly everyone can embrace the joy of skating.
