Large Canadian contingent in Germany for Bavarian Open

OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada will have 13 entries, for a total of 18 skaters at the 2017 Bavarian Open in Oberstdorf, Germany, an international event featuring competition at the novice, junior and senior level. At the junior level, Canada will have three entries in men and two entries per discipline in ladies, pairs and ice dance. At the novice level, Canada will have two entries in men, and one entry per discipline in ladies and ice dance. The event runs from February 14-19, 2017.

World junior silver medallist Nicolas Nadeau, 19, Boisbriand, Que., is the first of three Canadian junior men. This season, he placed 11th at the Golden Spin of Zagreb and fourth at the 2017 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. Nadeau trains in Rosemère, Que., and is coached by Yvan Desjardins.

Joseph Phan, 15, Laval, Que., will also represent Canada in junior men. This season on the ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit, he placed sixth at the event in the Czech Republic and fifth at the event in Slovenia. Phan also placed 11th in the senior category at the Canadian championships. He is coached by Yvan Desjadrins in in Rosemère, Que.

Canadian junior silver medallist Conrad Orzel, 16, Woodbridge, Ont., will round out the Canadian junior men entries. This season, Orzel placed 10th at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in France and Germany. He is coached by Eva Najarro and trains in Richmond Hill, Ont.

Sarah Tamura, 16, Burnaby, B.C., is the first of two Canadian junior ladies. Tamura placed eighth at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Slovenia and sixth in Germany this season. She also placed fifth at the 2017 Canadian championships. Tamura is coached by Joanne McLeod in Burnaby, B.C.

Canadian junior champion Aurora Cotop, 14, Toronto, Ont., will also represent Canada in junior ladies. Earlier this season she won the junior category at the 2016 Autumn Classic International. Cotop is coached by Jonathan Mills and Myke Gillman in Thornhill, Ont.

Canadian junior champions Evelyn Walsh, 15, London, Ont., and Trennt Michaud, 20, Strathroy, Ont., are one of two Canadian junior pairs competing at this event. Earlier this season, the pair competed at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Estonia and placed 11th, and in Germany, where they placed fifth. Walsh and Michaud are coached by Alison Purkiss and Margaret Purdy, and train in London, Ont.

Canadian junior silver medallists Lori-Anne Matte, 17, Lévis, Que., and Thierry Ferland, 19, Lévis, Que., are the other Canadian junior pair entry at the event. Earlier this season, they placed sixth at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in the Czech Republic and fourth in Russia. Matte and Ferland are coached by Martine Simard in Lévis, Que.

Canadian junior champions Marjorie Lajoie, 16, Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha, 17, Greenfield Park, Que., are the first of two Canadian ice dance entries. This season, they finished fourth at both of their ISU Junior Grand Prix assignments: Japan and Germany. They train in Montreal, Que., with coaches Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon, Romain Haguenauer and Pascal Denis.

Canadian junior silver medallists Ashlynne Stairs, 16, Calgary, Alta. and Lee Royer, 18, St. Albert, Alta., will also be representing Canada in the junior ice dance discipline. The duo finished seventh and fifth respectively at their ISU Junior Grand Prix assignments in France and Slovenia. Stairs and Royer are coached by Megan Wing and Aaron Lowe at the Champs International Skating Centre in Burnaby, B.C.

Canadian junior champion Stephen Gogolev, 12, Toronto, Ont., is one of two Canadian entries in the novice men’s competition. This will be his first international assignment. He is coached by Brian Orser and Lee Barkell in Toronto, Ont.

Canadian novice champion Corey Circelli, 14, Vaughan, Ont., will also be competing at his first international assignment representing Canada in the novice men’s event. He is coached by Lee Barkell in Toronto, Ont.

Canadian novice champion Catherine Carle, 13, Georgetown, Ont., will represent Canada in the novice ladies event. This will be her first international assignment. She is coached by Nancy Lemaire and Anne Fisher in Milton, Ont.

Canadian novice champions Natalie D’Alessandro, 12, Toronto, Ont., and Bruce Waddell, 15, Toronto, Ont., will represent Canada in the novice ice dance event. This will be their first international assignment. They are coached by Andrew Hallam and Siobhan Karam in Toronto, Ont.

André Bourgeois, Skate Canada NextGen Director, and Terra Findlay, of Echo Bay, Ont., will be the Canadian team leaders at the event. Siobhan Karam of Ottawa, Ont., will be the Canadian team physiotherapist onsite. Karen Butcher of Greely, Ont., will be the sole Canadian official at the event.
