Canadian Teams Skate into Top Five on Day One of World Synchronized Skating Championships
Helsinki, Finland (April 4, 2025) – The 2025 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships kicked off on Friday in Helsinki, Finland, with both Canadian teams sitting in the top five after the short program.
National silver medalists, Nova (Saint-Hubert, QC), earned a score of 69.27 to finish fourth in the short program. The reigning world synchronized skating champions, Les Suprêmes (Saint-Léonard, QC), sit in fifth place with a score of 68.50.
Two Finnish teams, Helsinki Rockettes (79.49) and Unique (77.31), are in the lead ahead of the American team Haydenettes (76.53).
“We are happy with the way we skated, but a little disappointed with the score,” said Alycia O’Leary, co-captain of Nova. “We know we are one of the best teams and our scores don’t reflect what we’ve done all year. It’s disappointing, but we’re proud of what we’ve done.”
For Les Suprêmes, the disappointment was palpable, as the Saint-Léonard team has won the last three World Championships.
“It started with a little bit of difficulty with a fall in a twist,” co-captain Olivia Di Giandominico acknowledged. “We tried to put everything back in place, but unfortunately, we had another fall. The crowd cheered us on and that allowed us to continue. We really felt their energy and their love all the way until the end.”
The free program will take place on Saturday at the Helsinki Ice Hall. The full competition results are available here.
