D’Alessandro and Waddell Win Second ISU Junior Grand Prix Medal

LJUBLJANA – Toronto ice dancers Natalie D’Alessandro and Bruce Waddell earned a second medal this season on the ISU Junior Grand Prix figure skating circuit on Saturday with a bronze.

Russians Vasilia Kaganovskaia and Valeriy Angelopol maintained top spot for the gold with 167.22 points. Katarina Wolfkostin and Jeffrey Chen of the U.S. took the silver with 163.25 and the Canadians took third spot with 161.79.

D’Alessandro and Waddell beat the Russians three weeks ago for gold at the third stop in Slovakia and were a close second after Friday’s rhythm dance.

Alyssa Robinson of Ridgetown, Ont., and Jacob Portz of Calgary made an impressive climb in the standings with their free dance surging from 11th to sixth overall with 132.09 in their Junior Grand Prix debut.

In women’s competition, Adeliia Petrosian led Russia to a 1-2 finish. Sofia Samodelkina was second and Lindsay Thorngren of the U.S. was third.

Audréanne Foster of Forestville, Que., was 12th in her Junior Grand Prix debut.

‘’It was a wonderful experience,’’ said the 17-year-old Foster. ‘’I’m really proud of both my programs.’’

The next stop on the circuit is this upcoming Thursday to Saturday in Gdansk, Poland.

Canadian ice dancers in hunt for second gold at ISU Junior Grand Prix

LJUBLJANA – Ice dancers Natalie D’Alessandro and Bruce Waddell are chasing a a second victory on the ISU Junior Grand Prix figure skating circuit this season.

The Toronto couple are second after Friday’s rhythm dance with 64.26 points, just slightly behind Russians Vasilia Kaganovskaia and Valeriy Angelopol currently first with 66.00. Katarina Wolfkostin and Jeffrey Chen of the U.S. are third at 62.99.

D’Alessandro and Waddell earned their first international victory at the third stop in Kosice finishing ahead of the same Russians. They were just 0.22 points off their personal best rhythm dance set three weeks ago.

Alyssa Robinson of Ridgetown, Ont., and Jacob Portz of Calgary are 11th.

The men’s free skate was also held on Friday. Alec Guinzbourg of Aurora, Ont., finished 10th in his third appearance on the circuit. Ilya Yablokov of Russia won the event.

‘’My experience here was great,’’ said Guinzbourg, 17. ‘’Even tough the programs were not the best, it still felt good to be out there competing.’’

In Thursday’s women’s short program, Audréanne Foster of Forestville, Que., was ninth.

Competition ends Saturday with the free dance and the women’s free.

KOSICE, Slovakia – The junior men’s competition came to a close today. Russia’s Kirill Sarnovskiy rose form third place after the short program to take home the gold medal with a score of 215.96. Ilya Yablokov, also from Russia, held strong in second place with a score of 207.39. William Annis of the U.S. fell from first to third today to capture the bronze medal with a score of 204.60 points.

A great free program skate from Corey Circelli of Toronto, Ontario. Circelli climbed from eigth place after the short program yesterday to finish the competition in fourth place with a total score of 191.13.

“I felt a lot of redemption in my long program today.” Circelli shared.

The pairs competition also came to conclusion today. Russia’s team, Anastasia Mukhortova and Dmitry Evgenyev took home the gold medal with a score of 171.99. Capturing the silver medal was, Karina Safina and Luka Berulava of Georgia with 168.26 and scoring the bronze medal was Polina Kostiukovich and Aleksei Briukhanov of Russia with 158.82 points.

The Canadian pairs team, Meghan Fredette, of Gatineau, Que. and William St-Louis of Shawinigan, Que., finished in sixth with a score of 131.36.

When asked about their performance, St-Louis said, “It was a good opportunity, this is the beginning and our first international competition so we just learn from it.”

Competition at this Junior Grand Prix will come to a close tomorrow with the women’s free skate and the free dance in the ice dance.

The results after the women’s short program see Russia currently sitting in spots one, two and three. In first, is Sofia Muravieva with a score of 72.52. Sitting in second is Veronika Zhilina with a score of 71.57 and in the bronze medal position is Adeliia Petrosian with a score of 69.30.

Canada’s Justine Miclette of Chambly, Que is currently ranked in fourteenth with a score of 45.45.

The action in Ice Dance will continue tomorrow. Keep an eye out for Canada’s Natalie D’Alessandro and Bruce Waddell of Toronto, Ont. This team is currently sitting in medal contention after their Rhythm Dance this morning and is ranked second with a score of 64.48. D’Alessandro and Waddell are just 0.36 points away from the current first place team, Vasilisa Kaganovskaia and Valeriy Angelopol, from Russia, with a score of 64.84 points. In third place is Sofya Tyutyunina and Alexander Shustitskiy, also from Russia, with a score of 63.10

Canada’s second ice dance team at this event, Chloe Nguyen of Edmonton, Atla., and Alec Roueche of Surrey, B.C., are currently ranked in tweflth place with a score of 44.10.

Competition ends Saturday with the free skates for women and ice dancing.

HALIFAX – Eleven-year-old Stephen Gogolev of Toronto landed a triple Axel en route to the gold medal in men’s novice competition which concluded on Wednesday at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships.

Gogolev scored 142.30 to outdistance his nearest rival by more than 20 points. Matthew Markell of Prescott, Ont., took silver at 120.25 and Bruce Waddell of Toronto was third at 106.91.

‘’I felt more comfortable in the long program than the short,’’ said Gogolev, who is coached by Brian Orser. ‘’I just wanted to go out there and do my best for my first nationals.’’

Markell also delivered a personal best performance. ‘’There are some elements I know I could have done better but it is a great way to end the season,’’ he said.

Ontario skaters grabbed all four Canadian titles in novice.

In ice dancing, Olivia Han and Grayson Lochhead of Kitchener, Ont., took the gold with 90.26 points. Alicia Fabbri of Terrebonne, Que., and Claudio Pietrantonio and Laval, Que., were second at 89.22 and Irina Galiyanova and Tommy Tang of Toronto were third at 87.50.

‘’It was pretty intense and lots of fun,’’ said Han. ‘’We are pretty proud of our performances.’’

In pairs, first-year teammates Jamie Knoblauch and Cody Wong of Milton, Ont., were the victors at 119.90. Katrina Lopez and Kurtis Schreiber of Calgary were second at 104.81 and Hannah Dawson of Hawkesbury, Ont., and Daniel Villeneuve of Sherbrooke, Que., were third at 103.50.

‘’We did exactly what we wanted,’’ said Wong. ‘’We had fun with it.’’

In women’s competition, Aurora Cotop of Thornhill, Ont., overcame a three point deficit after the short program to win gold with 123.85. Olivia Gran of Kelowna, B.C., the leader heading into the long, followed at 121.84 and Natalie D’Alessandro of Thornhill was third 117.56.

‘’For my free program I really wanted to just perform after getting the nerves out in the short,’’ said Cotop. ‘’I wanted to show what I could do.’’

Competition continues Thursday with the completion of the junior event.

The seniors go Friday and Saturday.
