Soucisse and Firus Climb Standings at ISU Grand Prix

TORINO, Italy- Carolane Soucisse of Chateauguay, Que., and Shane Firus of North Vancouver cracked the 100-point mark for the third time this season for their free dance to finish seventh in ice dancing Saturday at the Gran Premio d’Italia, the third stop on the ISU Grand Prix circuit.

The top-three remained unchanged after Friday’s rhythm dance. Four-time world champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France won the gold medal with 220.06 points, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue of the U.S. were second at 207.90 and Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin of Russia were third at 202.12.

Soucisse and Firus, competing for the fourth time this fall, were eighth after Friday’s short program. They earned 100.46 points for their free skate to finish at 163.86 which was almost two points better than their score two weeks ago when they were also seventh at Skate America.

They were the only Canadian entry at this week’s stop which was originally scheduled for China but relocated due to pandemic-related travel issues.

The big story of the day was a fantastic comeback by Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama to win the gold medal in men’s competition. He was seventh after the short program but topped the field by more than 18 points in his free skate to take the gold with 278.02. Mikhail Kolyada of Russia was second at 273.55.

Earlier in the women’s free skate, reigning world champion Anna Shcherbakova of Russia climbed from third after the short to win the gold with 236.78. Her compatriot Maiia Khromyk was second at 226.35 and Belgium’s Loena Hendrickx, the surprise leader after the short, took the bronze with 219.05.

There were no surprises in pairs as Wenjing Sui and Cong Han of China won the gold with 224.55 and their compatriots Cheng Peng and Yang Jin were second at 211.86.

The fourth stop on the circuit is the NHK Trophy this upcoming Friday and Saturday in Tokyo.

Canadian Ice Dancers Eighth After Rhythm Dance at ISU Grand Prix

TORINO, Italy – Carolane Soucisse of Chateauguay, Que., and Shane Firus of North Vancouver are in eighth place after Friday’s rhythm dance at the Gran Premio d’Italia, the third stop on the ISU Grand Prix circuit.

Four-time world champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France are in first place in ice dancing with 87.45 points, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue of the U.S., second at 84.79 and Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin of Russia third at 81.47.

Soucisse and Firus, competing for the fourth time this season, earned 63.40 which was a slight improvement on their score at Skate America two weeks ago in Las Vegas. They are the only Canadian entry at this week’s stop which was originally scheduled for China but relocated due to pandemic issues.

Prior to the ice dancing, a Russian showdown in women’s singles between Maiia Khromyk and reigning world champion Anna Shcherbakova for gold was infiltrated with Belgium’s Loena Hendrickx in first place after the short program with 73.52

The Russians though are in hot pursuit. Khromyk posted a 72.04 score for second spot and Shcherbakova is third at 71.73.

China is 1-2 in pairs with last week’s Skate Canada International champions Wenjing Sui and Cong Han first at 80.07 and compatriots Cheng Peng and Yang Jin second at 76.71.

Another Chinese skater is first after the men’s short. Boyang Jin totalled 97.89 with Daniel Grassl of Italy second at 95.67 and Junhwan Cha of South Korea third at 95.56.

All four free skates are on Saturday.

One Canadian Ice Dance team heads to Torino for the 2021 Gran Primo D’Italia

OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada will have only one entry for a total of two skaters competing at the Gran Primo D’Italia 2021. Canada’s lone entry will be in Ice Dance. This will be the third event in the 2021/2022 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series and the event takes place from November 5 to 7, 2021 in Torino, Italy. 

Carolane Soucisse, 26, Châteauguay, Que., and Shane Firus, 27, North Vancouver, BC., are the lone entry in ice dance. This season they finished seventh at Skate America 2021 and fifth at the 2021 Autum Classic International. They are coached by Carol Lane and Juris Razgulajevs in Toronto, Ont. 

Marie Bowness of Halifax, N.S., will be the Canadian team leader at the event. Physiotherapist Shirley Kushner of Westmount, Que., will be the Canadian team medical staff on site. Ron Conacher of Toronto, Ont., will be the Canadian official at the event.

Seven Canadians Kick Off ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating in Las Vegas

OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada will have four entries for a total of seven skaters competing at Skate America 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canada will have one entry in men, one entry in pairs and two entries in ice dance. This is the first event in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating and the event takes place from October 22 to 24, 2021.    

Nam Nguyen, 23, Ajax, Ont., will be the lone Canadian entry in men. Nguyen finished second at the 2021 Skate Canada Challenge and finished sixth at the 2020 ISU Four Continents Championships. He is coached by Robert Burk, Danielle Rose and Ken Rose in Richmond Hill, Ont.   

Evelyn Walsh, 20, London, Ont., and Trennt Michaud, 25, Trenton, Ont., will be the only Canadian entry in pairs. Last season, Walsh and Michaud placed twelfth at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships.  They are coached by Alison Purkiss, Andrew Evans and Paul Macintosh in Brantford, Ont.   

Laurence Fournier Beaudry, 29, Montreal, Que., and Nikolaj Sørensen, 32, Montreal, Que., are the first Canadian entry in ice dance. They finished second at the 2021 Lombardia Trophy in Bergamo, Italy and placed eighth at the 2021 ISU World Figure Skating Championships They are coached by Marie-France Dubreuil, Patrice Lauzon and Romain Haguenauer in Montreal, Que.

Lajoie and Lagha Seventh Against Stellar Field at Finlandia Trophy

ESPOO, Finland – Canadian ice dancers Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha maintained their seventh-place position after Sunday’s free dance to conclude the Finlandia Trophy figure skating competition, the fourth stop on the ISU Challenger Series.

Four-time world champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France took the gold with 217.54 points. Defending champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the U.S. followed at 208.31 and Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson of Britain were third at 190.39.

Lajoie and Lagha, the 2019 world junior champions, ranked seventh in both programs this week finishing with 181.03. They were fourth in their season debut at the Autumn Classic International last month in Pierrefonds, Que.

‘’We were really nervous,’’ said Lagha, 22, from St-Hubert, Que. ‘’It was a good accomplishment to get through a performance like that.’’

The couple had firm objectives for this event.

‘’Every little element there was a stress for us,’’ added Lajoie, 20, from Boucherville, Que. ‘’We wanted to make sure we successfully check marked each of the sections in our program.  In the end we were quite happy about it.’’

Carolane Soucisse of Chateauguay, Que., and Shane Firus of North Vancouver climbed three spots after the rhythm dance to place 11th.

‘’We are super happy with free dance, it went as planned,’’ said Soucisse. ‘’We were confident going in. There’s some work to do on the rhythm dance but the programs are taking form and trending in the right direction.’’

The couple was delighted to perform before spectators.

‘’It was great to be in front of a crowd again and they really carried us through our free dance,’’ said Firus, fifth with his partner at the Autumn Classic International. 

In women’s competition, Madeline Schizas of Oakville, Ont., brought a huge cheer from the crowd with her eighth-ranked free skate to jump from 12th after the short program to ninth overall. The 18-year-old produced a clean program which opened with a triple Lutz-triple toe and included two other combos as well as the double Axel.

Russia was 1-2-3 with Kamila Valieva, the 2019 Junior Grand Prix Final champion earning the gold.

‘’I was really happy with my performance today,’’ said Schizas, 13th at the world championships this past March. ‘’I came here to put out my tech content some of which is new for this season.’’

TEN CANADIAN SKATERS HEADED TO FINLAND FOR FINLANDIA TROPHY

OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada will have six entries, for a total of ten skaters competing at the 2021 Finlandia Trophy in Espoo, Finland this week. Canada will have one entry in men, one entry in women, two entries in pairs and two entries in ice dance. This event is the fourth stop of the 2021 ISU Challenger Series and takes place from October 7 to 10, 2021.

Keegan Messing, 29, Girdwood, Alaska, USA, will be the lone Canadian entry in men. Last season, Messing finished sixth at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships® 2021 and brought home bronze at Skate America. He is coached by Ralph Burghart in Anchorage, Alaska, USA.

Madeline Schizas, 18, Oakville, Ont., will be the only Canadian entry in women. Last season Schizas finished first at the Skate Canada Challenge and thirteenth at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships® 2021. She is coached by Nancy Lemaire and Derek Schmidt in Milton, Ont.

National pairs team, Kirsten Moore-Towers, 29, St. Catharines, Ont., and Michael Marinaro, 29, Sarnia, Ont., will be the first of two Canadian entries in pairs. Last season they finished sixth at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships® 2021. They are coached by Bruno Marcotte, Alison Purkiss and Brian Shales in Oakville, Ont.

National pairs team, Vanessa James, 34, Scarborough, Ont., and Eric Radford, 36, Balmertown, Ont., will be the second Canadian entry in pairs. They finished second at the 2021 Autumn Classic International. This is their first season competing together internationally. They are coached by Julie Marcotte in Montreal, Que.

In 2020, they finished third in the Canadian Tire National Skating Championships and most recently finished fifth at the 2021 Autumn Classic International They are coached by Carol Lane and Juris Razgulajevs in Toronto, Ont.

Gilles and Poirier Open International Season with Victory at Autumn Classic International

PIERREFONDS, Que. – Ice dancers Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Toronto opened their international season Saturday with a victory to conclude the Autumn Classic International figure skating competition.

The world championship bronze medallists earned 208.97 points for top spot with Olivia Smart and Adrian Diaz of Spain second at 191.31 and Caroline Green and Michael Parsons of the U.S. third at 188.43.

‘’We’re very pleased with the way both programs went,’’ said Poirier. ‘’We didn’t try to force things or have that perfect skate. We just want to get everything sharper and we’re really excited to deliver such a strong showing and show that we keep improving.’’

Marjorie Lajoie of Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha of St-Hubert, Que., the 2019 world junior champions, totalled 181.74 for fourth.

‘’We’re really happy with the free dance and we didn’t hold back,’’ said Lagha. ‘’During the off season we really worked on our skating skills and made some needed changes to our programs.’’

Carolane Soucisse of Chateauguay, Que., and Shane Firus of North Vancouver were fifth and Haley Sales of Kelowna, B.C., and Nikolas Wamsteeker of Langley, B.C. took sixth.

In an all-Canadian men’s event, Conrad Orzel of Woodbridge, Ont., took the gold with 207.31 points, Bennet Toman of Brampton, Ont., was second at 172.33 and Beres Clements of Gibson, B.C., third at 153.48.

After landing two quads in the short on Friday, Orzel couldn’t execute them cleanly in the free skate and he also fell on one of his triple Axels.

‘’There’s some good takeaways from this competition despite a really bad long,’’ said Orzel, 21, sixth at this event in 2019. ‘’There’s no way of sugar coating it, it was not what I had been showing in practice. But it helps me re-evaluate how I should prepare when I compete.’’

Besides Saturday’s four medals, Canada also won a silver in pairs with Vanessa James and Eric Radford on Friday.

Soucisse and Firus near podium at Finlandia Open

ESPOO, Finland – Carolane Soucisse of Chateauguay, Que., and Shane Firus of North Vancouver took fourth spot in ice dancing on Sunday to conclude the Finlandia Open figure skating competition. The event was the sixth stop on the ISU Challenger Series circuit.

Two-time world champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guilaume Cizeron of France won the gold at 188.25, Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin of Russia were second at 166.88 and Laurence Fournier-Beaudry and Nikolay Sorensen of Denmark were third at 158.21.

Soucisse and Firus were also fourth after the short dance and totalled 154.60. The result was one placing higher than at the season opening Challenger Series event last month in Salt Lake City.

‘’For the short dance we were pretty solid and happy about the scores,’’ said Soucisse. ‘’In the free dance we had a couple of stumbles but at the end of the day we were pleased with what we accomplished.’’

The couple felt they improved since Salt Lake.

‘’We focused more on good levels and just skating bigger,’’ added Firus. ‘’We showed a lot of good energy as well which is really awesome.’’

In women’s competition, Maria Sotskova of Russia won the gold medal with 205.30 points. Carolina Kostner of Italy was second at 193.76 and Elizaveta Tuktamysheva of Russia third at 189.13.

Gabrielle Daleman of Newmarket, Ont., the world championship bronze medallist, placed sixth at 174.83. She was fifth after the short program and produced the seventh best free skate.

She opened with a triple-triple combination and also landed a triple-double-double and double Axel. Two falls near the end hurt her overall result.

‘’It wasn’t my best but overall definitely a step in the right direction,’’ said Daleman. ‘’Both programs this year are much harder skating skill wise. There’s more choreography and difficulty. There was a lot of good stuff but also a lot I need to go home and work on.’’

Soucisse and Firus place fifth in ice dancing at 2017 U.S. International Figure Skating Classic

SALT LAKE CITY – Carolane Soucisse of Chateauguay, Que., and Shane Firus of North Vancouver, B.C., were fifth in ice dancing on Saturday to conclude the 2017 U.S. International Figure Skating Classic.

Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue led the U.S. to a 1-2 finish with 178.80 points with Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker second at 153.55. Kana Muramoto and Chris Reed of Japan were third at 151.45.

Soucisse and Firus earned 137.43.

In women’s competition, Marin Honda of Japan took the gold with Mirai Nagasu of the U.S. second and her compatriot Karen Chen third.

Alicia Pineault of Varennes, Que., was sixth and Michelle Long of Newmarket, Ont., eighth.

Canada ended the competition with two medals. On Friday, Kirsten Moore-Towers of St. Catharines, Ont., and Michael Marinaro of Sarnia, Ont., won the gold medal in pairs and Liam Firus of North Vancouver was third in men’s singles.

Canadian skaters in France for Cup of Nice

OTTAWA, ON: Canada will have two entries at the 21st annual Cup of Nice, a senior international competition. Canada will have one entry in ladies and one entry in ice dance at the event which runs from October 19-23, 2016, at the Patinoire Jean Bouin in Nice, France.

Carolane Soucisse, 21, Châteauguay, Que., and Shane Firus, 22, Barrie, Ont., will be the Canadian entry competing in ice dance. This will be their second international assignment together, having placed seventh at the 2016 Autumn Classic International. Soucisse and Firus are coached by Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon in Montreal, Que.

Eri Nishimura, 22, Toronto, Ont., will represent Canada in the ladies’ discipline. This will be her first international assignment. Last season, she placed eighth at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. Nishimura is coached by Brian Orser in Toronto, Ont.

Canadian skaters headed to Montreal for Skate Canada Autumn Classic International

OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada will send 18 entries, for a total of 23 skaters to the third annual Skate Canada Autumn Classic International (#ACI16). Canada will have 10 entries at the senior level ISU Challenger Series event including two entries per discipline in men’s and pair and three entries per discipline in ladies and ice dance. The junior category of the event will feature eight Canadian entries including two in men’s and six in ladies. The event runs from September 28-October 1, 2016, at the Sportplexe Pierrefonds in Montreal, Que.

Keegan Messing, 24, Girdwood, Alaska, USA, is one of two Canadian entries in men’s. Last season, Messing placed fifth at the Ondrej Nepela Trophy, 11th at Skate Canada International and sixth at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. The representative of Sherwood Park FSC is coached by Ralph Burghart in Anchorage, Alaska, USA.

Bennet Toman, 19, Brampton, Ont., is the second Canadian entry in men’s. Last season, he placed sixth at this event. Toman also placed eighth at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships and fourth at the 2016 Coupe de Printemps. He is coached by Robert O’Toole in Mississauga, Ont.

Canadian Champion Alaine Chartrand, 20, Prescott, Ont., is the first of three Canadian entries in the ladies category. Last year, Chartrand placed 12th at Skate America, sixth at the Rostelecom Cup, 11th at the ISU Four Continents Championships, and 17th at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships. The representative of the Nepean Skating Club is coached by Michelle Leigh and Brian Orser.

Michelle Long, 24, Newmarket, Ont., is the second Canadian entry in the ladies discipline. This will be her first international assignment. Last season, she placed fifth at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. Long is coached by Robert Burk and Danielle Rose in Richmond Hill, Ont.

Larkyn Austman, 18, Coquitlam, B.C., will also represent Canada in the ladies discipline. Last season, she finished sixth at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. She is coached by Zdenek Pazdirek in Coquitlam, B.C.

Canadian silver medallists in 2016, Julianne Séguin, 19, Longueuil, Que., and Charlie Bilodeau, 23, Trois-Pistoles, Que., are the first of two Canadian pair entries at the event. Last season, they placed fifth at the Nebelhorn Trophy, and won bronze at Skate America and Trophée Éric Bompard. Séguin and Bilodeau are coached by Josée Picard in Chambly, Que.

Camille Ruest, 22, Rimouski, Que., and Andrew Wolfe, 21, Calgary, Alta., will also represent Canada in pair. This will be their first international assignment together. Ruest and Wolfe are coached by Richard Gauthier and Bruno Marcotte in Montreal, Que.

Olympic and World champions Tessa Virtue, 27, London, Ont., and Scott Moir, 29, Ilderton, Ont., lead the Canadian entries in ice dance. Virtue and Moir return to competition after taking two seasons off following the 2014 Olympic Winter Games where they earned silver medals in ice dance and in the team event. Virtue and Moir are coached by Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon in Montreal, Que.

Junior Entries

Canadian junior silver medallist Edrian Paul Celestino, 18, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Que., is one of two Canadian representatives in the junior men’s category. Last season, he placed fourth at this event in the junior category. This season, he placed ninth at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Russia. He is coached by Daniel Beland in Montreal, Que.

Iliya Kovler, 13, Richmond Hill, Ont., is the second Canadian entry in the junior men’s category. This will be his first international assignment. Kovler placed fourth in the novice category at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. He is coached by Andrei Berezintsev in Richmond Hill, Ont.

Canadian junior silver medallist in 2016, Alicia Pineault, 16, Varennes, Que., is one of six Canadian entries in the junior ladies category. Last year, she won the silver medal at this event. This season, she placed 10th at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in the Czech Republic. Pineault is coached by Stéphane Yvars in Boucherville, Que.

Amanda Tobin, 16, Burlington, Ont., will also represent Canada in junior ladies. This will be her first international assignment. Tobin placed fifth at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in the junior category. She is coached by Leesa Velenosi, Raoul LeBlanc, and Kristy Bell in Burlington, Ont.

McKenna Colthorp, 15, Fort St. James, B.C., will represent Canada in the junior ladies category. Last year, she won the bronze medal at this event and placed seventh in the junior category at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. She is coached by Karen Mongrain and Jason Mongrain in Kelowna, B.C.

Canadian novice champion in 2016, Aurora Cotop, 14, Toronto, Ont., will represent Canada in junior ladies. This will be her first international assignment. Cotop is coached by Jonathan Mills and Myke Gillman in Thornhill, Ont.

Canadian novice silver medallist Olivia Gran, 13, Kelowna, B.C., will represent Canada in junior ladies. Earlier this season she placed ninth at her ISU Junior Grand Prix assignment in France. Gran is coached by Karen and Jason Mongrain in Kelowna, B.C.

Also representing Canada in junior ladies is Lissa Anne McGaghey, 16, Campbellton, N.B. This will be her first international assignment. Last season, she placed 11th in the novice women’s category at the 2016 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. McGaghey is coached by Stéphane Yvars in Boucherville, Que.

Scott Rachuk of Strathroy, Ont., and Terra Findlay of Echo Bay, Ont., will be the Canadian team leaders onsite. Dr. Ed Pilat of Winnipeg, Man., and physiotherapist Josiane Roberge of Sillery, Que., will be the Canadian medical staff onsite. Karen Howard of Regina, Sask., Jérôme Poulin of Montreal, Que., Véronique Gosselin of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., and Nicole Leblanc-Richard of Dieppe, N.B., will be the Canadian officials at the event.
