Joannie Rochette, from Montréal, Québec and raised in île Dupas, is the first Canadian women skater to have won the gold medal in all three national events: 2001 Novice Championship; 2002 Junior Championship and 2005 Senior Championship, a title she held for six consecutive years through 2010.
Rochette was also successful internationally – including earning the bronze medal at the 2004 Grand Prix Final, the silver medal at the 2009 ISU World Figure Skating Championship, the gold medal at the 2006, 2008 and 2009 Skate Canada International and silver medals at the 2008 and 2009 Four Continents Figure Skating Championship.
Rochette left her mark on the heart of a nation at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, with her emotional bronze-medal performance, which led to her being named Female Athlete of the Year by Canadian Press. Following her retirement from competitive skating, Rochette attended medical school and is now a physician and remains actively involved in the figure skating community, acting as an ambassador for Skate Canada at several events.
