Two Silver Medals for Canada at ISU Junior Grand Prix
GDAŃSK, POLAND (Oct. 4, 2025) – The Canadian team won two silver medals at the sixth stop of the ISU Junior Grand Prix (JGP), which ended Saturday in Gdańsk, Poland. In pairs, Jazmine Desrochers (Mississauga, Ont.) and Kieran Thrasher (Oakville, Ont.) climbed on the second step of the podium, as did their compatriots Layla Veillon (London, Ont.) and Alexander Brandys (London, Ont.) in ice dancing.
Silver medalists at the Bangkok event a few weeks ago, Desrochers and Thrasher scored 160.50 points. The Chinese pairs of Xuanqi Zhang and Wengiang Feng (169.11) and Yuxuan Chen and Yunbo Dong (152.77) finished first and third, respectively.
“We wanted to keep up our momentum and continue to improve. I think there have been some great improvements, especially in our free program,” continued her partner Thrasher.
At the same competition, Julia Quattrocchi (Laval, QC) and Étienne Lacasse (Sainte-Thérèse, QC) took fourth place (150.45). With their results, these Canadian pair teams secured their ticket for the Grand Prix Junior Final to be held in December.
Junior Grand Prix rookies Ava Cheung (Richmond, BC) and Stephen Lee (Richmond, BC) finished 14th (120.63).
The other Canadian silver medal of the event went to Ontarians ice dancers Layla Veillon and Alexander Brandys (161.44), both from London. Ukrainians Iryna Pidgaina and Artem Koval (164.44) took gold and Italians Arianna Soldati and Nicholas Tagliabue (144.18) won bronze.
Winners of the circuit’s first event in Latvia, the Canadians mentioned feeling additional pressure.
“We had pressure and expectations, but working with our sports psychologist helped us,” Veillon acknowledged. “That’s really what’s allowed us to calm down and have a good mindset without thinking about expectations.”
Reigning Canadian junior silver medalist Edward Vasil (Montreal, Que., 185.74) placed 10th in the men’s event.
In the women’s competition, Hannah Quinn (Toronto, Ont.) finished in 13th place (139.72).
