2026 Skate Canada Cup Crowns New Champions
WATERLOO, ONTARIO (March 8, 2026) — Meraki (Toronto, Ont.) delivered a standout performance at the 2026 Skate Canada Cup in Waterloo, capturing gold in the Gold category with a score of 191.20.
The team got off to a great start in the first free program segment on Friday, scoring 95.97 points and clinching first place. They went on to finish third in the second free program with 95.23 points, but their early and commanding lead helped them hang on to their top spot and the gold medal.
“Going into this competition, we were really excited to not just do it for our fans and our families, but to have this skate for ourselves and our amazing coaches who supported us every step of the way,” said Meraki Gold co-captain Lily Johnston. “I think we really just wanted to go out there and prove to not only everyone else in the building but to ourselves that we are capable of great things.”
Rounding out the podium in the Gold category, Les Éclypses (Mirabel, Que.) finished second with a total of 186.69 points, followed closely by NEXXICE (Burlington, Ont.) in third place with a score of 186.60.
In the Novice category, Prima (Laval, Que.) secured a gold medal after finishing first in both free programs, with a total score of 186.67 points.
“We’re really proud of what we did,” said Prima Novice co-captain Alycia Noisette.
Joining them on the podium are Les Suprêmes (St. Leonard, Que.), silver medallists with 173.20 points, and team Nova (St. Hubert, Que.), who finished third with 169.51 points.
It was a double podium finish for team Nova, as they took gold in the Open category with a total of 211.62 points. Team Starlites (Mount Pearl, Nfld) finished second with 211.06 points, while Les Suprêmes finished third with 201.63 points.
“We’re really, really, really happy,” said Nova Open co-captain, Laura Derome. “It’s definitely an excellent way to end the season, and we really appreciate it.”
Team NEXXICE took the Junior category, winning gold with 209.08 points. They will be in action at the 2026 ISU Synchronized Skating Junior World Championships, March 13-14 in Gdańsk, Poland. Team Ice Ignite (Ilderton, Ont.) finished second with 173.00 points, and Gold Ice (Brampton, Ont.) finished third with 167.46 points.
“Heading into this competition, we really just wanted to showcase all the work we’ve put in after our competition in Latvia and put on a show,” said NEXXICE Junior captain, Sadie Denham after their skate. “A lot of our younger teams from our club were here and we just wanted to inspire, as well.”
