Madeline Schizas Misses Qualification on Day 11 at Milano Cortina 2026

MILAN, ITALY (Feb. 17, 2026)  Tuesday marked the beginning of the final figure skating event at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, with Madeline Schizas (Oakville, Ont.) on the ice to represent Canada with her Lion King inspired short program.

Schizas first had the opportunity to perform this routine earlier on in the team event, where she scored 64.97, finishing sixth.

Since then, the 23-year-old, who celebrated her birthday at the Olympics for the second time earlier this week, has been hard at work preparing for the women’s singles event. But this time around, things didn’t quite go to plan.

Schizas scored 55.38 points, finishing 25th overall and one spot out of qualifying for Thursday’s free program segment – a devastating end to her second Olympic experience.

“I made a couple of errors and I’m very disappointed with the way I skated today,” Schizas said. “I really didn’t expect that; I’ve been practicing well.”

Schizas stumbled on a key element, a major contributor to her score and in this case, the difference maker when it came down to who would move on to the final segment.

“I want to say I wasn’t nervous, I got no points for a whole element which was really unfortunate, and today that meant the difference between qualifying and not qualifying,” she said. “Obviously really unfortunate, but part of the sport and part of life.”

Following the conclusion of this segment, Japan leads the pack. Ami Nakai (78.71) currently sits in first position, with fellow countrywomen Kaori Sakamoto (77.23) in second. Team USA’s Alysa Liu currently sits in third with 76.59 points.

Competition will resume starting at 1:00 p.m. ET on Thursday.
