Team Canada Finishes Fifth in Figure Skating Team Event at Milano Cortina 2026

MILAN, ITALY (Feb. 8, 2026) — Canada’s Olympic figure skating team was back in action on Day 2 of competition at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, for the final three segments of the team event: the pairs, men’s and women’s free programs.

Up first for Canada was duo Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud, who put up seven points towards Team Canada’s score in the short program on Friday.

Skating to songs from the Gladiator soundtrack, Pereira and Michaud finished fifth in the free program, with a personal best score of 134.42.

“We are very proud and very happy that we were able to put out a skate like that,” Pereira said. “The Americans laid out a really great performance ahead of us. To feel that Olympic spirit in the building was very motivating for us and I think that can kind of go either way for an athlete, so I’m really glad that for us we took that as motivation and really helped fuel our performance today.”

This earned Canada six more points towards the team score. Japan’s Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara finished first in this segment with 155.55 points. Georgia’s Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava (139.70) finished second, and Italy’s Sara Conti and Niccolò Macii (136.61) finished third.

In the women’s free program, Madeline Schizas got off to a rocky start, falling out of her first jump, but managed to recover to deliver an otherwise strong performance, scoring 125.00 points, a season’s best.

It was not enough, however, to protect Canada’s chance at a medal in this event. She finished fifth, earning six points towards the team score which meant Canada was officially eliminated from medal contention.

“I was a little surprised by the first fall,” Schizas said after her skate. “So I’m really happy with how I came back and showed resilience in the second half of the program.”

Kaori Sakamoto of Japan led the pack in this segment, scoring 148.62 points. Georgia’s Anastasiia Gubanova (140.17) and Team USA’s Amber Glenn (138.62) finished second and third, respectively.

Wrapping up this team event, Stephen Gogolev took the ice in the men’s free program. He finished fourth in this segment, earning a personal best score of 171.93 points and seven team points. With this final performance, Canada finishes in fifth place with a total of 54 points.

“I had a few small mistakes that could have been prevented,” Gogolev said. “But I’m pretty happy with my performance, and I’m happy for the team and for the things that we were able to put out this week.”

Team USA’s Ilia Malinin scored 200.03 points despite a handful of missteps, earning 10 more points for Team USA and securing their gold medal win. Shun Sato finished second with 194.86 points, earning silver for Team Japan. Matteo Rizzo posted a 179.62 to lock in bronze for Team Italy.

Next for Canada’s Olympic figure skating team, three Canadian ice dance duos will hit the ice at 1:20 p.m. ET on Monday for the rhythm dance segment: Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain Le Gac, Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha, and Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier.
