Grayson Long Secures First International Win at 2026 Bavarian Open
OBERSTDORF, GERMANY (Feb. 1, 2026) — Grayson Long of Toronto, Ont. is headed home from Germany with a smile on his face and his first international gold medal in hand after sweeping the junior men’s category at the 2026 Bavarian Open in Oberstdorf, Germany.
Long got off to a strong start with his short program, scoring 69.80 and heading into Wednesday’s free program in first. He managed to hold onto his lead with a well-performed free skate, scoring 141.08 for a total of 210.88 points overall.
“It’s my first international gold, which I’ve been really looking forward to,” Long said after his performance. “I’m always on the podium and it’s someone else’s anthem being played so I’m excited to get that Canadian national anthem playing in this beautiful rink.”
Megan Woodley of Barrie, Ont. was on hand to represent Canada in the junior women’s category, finishing sixth overall in a field of 28 skaters with a total score of 142.26.
“The travel day was difficult,” Woodley said. “It was not an easy experience but I’m happy I was able to push through the competition even if it wasn’t my best skates.”
Switzerland pulled a 1-2 finish in the category, with Valeriya Ezhova and Leandra Tzimpoukakis rising to the top with scores of 180.45 and 178.86, respectively. France’s Stefania Gladki (170.84) followed close behind in third.
In junior pairs, Jazmine Desrochers and Kieran Thrasher (Ontario) emerged victorious, scoring 55.05 in the short program and 99.73 in the free program for an overall score of 154.78.
“We really just wanted to be able to take a step in the right direction, to be at our peak at junior worlds and I think we did that here,” Desrochers said of their performance.
“This is a new competition for us as a team.” added Thrasher. “Any new competition pushes you outside your comfort zone, which is a good thing for us.”
Julia Quattrocchi and Étienne Lacasse of Laval, Que. finished sixth overall with a score of 132.82.
In junior ice dance, Layla Veillon and Alexander Brandys of London, Ont. took silver with an overall 162.83 points–just shy of gold medal winners Ambre Perrier Gianesini and Samuel Blanc Klaperman of France (164.81).
Italy’s Arianna Soldati and Nicholas Tagliabue claimed bronze with 156.67 points. Summer Homick and Nicholas Buelow (Ontario) finished in sixth place with a score of 130.46.
Closing out the competition in senior ice dance, Alyssa Robinson and Jacob Portz of Calgary, Alta. finished fifth overall (163.00).
“We were very excited for this opportunity because we have never had a competition go this late in the season so it’s a good experience for us”, said Portz. “There’s always room for improvement, but our performances were good. We’re happy with the skate we put out and the effort that went into it.”
On the podium, Sweden’s Milla Ruud Reitan and Nikolaj Majorov took gold with 180.37 points. Elliana and Ethan Peal, brother-sister duo from Nashville, Tenn. took silver (178.82), and Italy’s Guilia Isabella Paolino and Andrea Tuba head home with bronze and an overall 168.57 points.
The week-long competition featured a 12-member Canadian team which totaled three medals (two gold, one silver).
