Madeline Schizas Wins Fourth National Title on Final Day of Canadian Championships
GATINEAU, QC (Jan. 11, 2026) – Ontario’s Madeline Schizas is a national champion yet again. The 22-year-old skater scored 135.94 points in her free skate to “Butterfly Lovers Concerto” at Centre Slush Puppie on Sunday.
After a disappointing short program Saturday, she managed to turn her focus towards preparing for the free and turned things around with a stellar performance, climbing from fourth to first with a total score of 200.86.
“I was disappointed with myself, because I know I can do that element and it’s always nice to have a bit of breathing room going into the free. In this case, I knew I was coming from behind, but I really didn’t dwell on it. I was really focused on how I could best prepare myself to skate today.”
With the Team Canada Olympic skating roster confirmed, Schizas now sets her sights on Milano Cortina 2026—her second Olympic Games.
“I’m so excited to be going to a second Olympics,” she said. “The first one was obviously COVID. I’ll have my family there. My aunt and uncle are coming, my parents are coming. I’m really, really excited that they’re all going to be there to support me.”
Gabrielle Daleman (Ontario) claimed silver with 195.35 points in her first national championship appearance since 2022 after being sidelined by injuries. Saturday’s leader, Minsol Kwon (Ontario) finished third with an overall score of 193.18.
A new record for Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier
Piper and Paul have done it again. After an energetic performance in Saturday’s rhythm dance, they delivered a stunning free dance capturing their fifth straight national title with an overall score of 231.05 – a new Canadian record.
“I think we just lived every single moment of that program,” Gilles said. “It went by so fast, but I felt like every fingertip, every little pointed toe felt like it was intentional, and I think when you can finish those programs, you just feel so special and honoured to be present in moments like that.”
Quebec’s Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha earned silver with an overall score of 217.32. Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain Le Gac, also of Quebec, took bronze with 200.93 points.
