Medal Sweep for Canada at Hevelius Cup Synchronized Skating Competition

GDANSK, Poland (February 11, 2023) – Canadian teams took gold, silver and bronze in the junior event on Saturday at the Hevelius Cup synchronized skating competition. The top-two gained ground in the standings with their free skates.

Canadian junior champions NEXXICE, from Burlington, Ont., moved from second after the short program to win the gold with 174.01 points. Ice Ignite from Ilderton, Ont., surged from fifth spot for the silver with 164.14 and Nova from St-Hubert, Que., remained third at 164.12.

‘’I thought our free skate was just incredible,’’ said NEXXICE co-captain Calie Williams. ‘’It was one of my favorite skates ever. It was great to redeem ourselves after a short program we didn’t feel too great about.’’

Ice Ignite were pleased with their consistency.

‘’It felt really calm,’’ said Ice Ignite coach Cara Moir. “We had a great practice and also competed really well. The skaters worked well with each other and had a lot of trust in their training.’’

Nova, gold medalists at the French Cup last week, were happy to maintain their excellence.

‘’We were very proud with the performance we delivered,’’ said Nova team captain Jordan Campbell. ‘’This is our third event in a month and it has been challenging preparing both programs to a level where we could be in the top-three internationally.’’
