Canada Wins Two Medals in Ice Dancing at Skate Canada International

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. (October 29, 2022) – Ice dance veterans Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Toronto successfully defended their Skate Canada International title on Saturday, producing their best-ever international score in the process. Gilles and Poirier delivered the best rhythm dance and free dance totaling 215.70 points, bettering their 2021 World Championships score of 214.35 where they won the bronze medal.

‘’We are absolutely thrilled,’’ said Gilles, seventh with Poirier at the 2022 Winter Olympics. ‘’We created a moment out there in both programs and just enjoyed ourselves. Having everybody here and feeling the energy is the moment we missed last year.’’

Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson of Great Britain took the silver at 209.18, while Marjorie Lajoie of Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha of St-Hubert, Que., snared their first career Grand Prix medal with 195.49 points. Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain Le Gac of Ste-Anne-des-Plaines, Que., took fifth spot at 189.07, also an international best.

‘’I’m very proud we won our first Grand Prix medal in Canada,’’ said Lajoie, who won the world junior title with Lagha in 2019. ‘’The program was really good today. We were nervous but we forgot what was around us when we were skating. Being at home is more stressful but it’s a better stress.’’

Canada’s Keegan Messing missed the podium in the men’s event by a mere 0.31 points, placing fourth with 250.72. World champion Shoma Uno led Japan to a 1-2 finish with 273.15, followed by Kao Miura in second at 265.29. Matteo Rizzo of Italy was third at 251.03. Stephen Gogolev of Toronto produced the fifth best free skate to move from 11th to seventh overall and Conrad Orzel of Woodbridge, Ont., was 11th.

‘’I couldn’t have asked for a better skate,’’ said Messing. ‘’To go out and perform like that, I’m so happy. I keep saying I’m not skating for a medal but for myself this year.’’

In pairs, world championship silver medalists Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara of Japan took the gold with 212.02. Emily Chan and Spencer Akira Howe of the U.S. won the silver with 186.48 and Sara Conti and Niccolo Macii of Italy were third at 186.18. Madeline Schizas of Oakville, Ont., was seventh and Gabrielle Daleman of Newmarket, Ont., 10th.

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. (October 28, 2022) – Olympians Madeline Schizas of Oakville, Ont., and Gabrielle Daleman of Newmarket, Ont., are currently sitting in first and second after skating clean programs in the women’s short program on Friday at Skate Canada International. In ice dance, defending champions Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Toronto lead after the rhythm dance and Canada is in the medal hunt in pairs and men’s.

‘’I’m standing here and there’s so many things I can do better,’’ said Schizas, a member of the 2022 Olympic team. ‘’It was my first clean skate of the year and I’m really happy to pull it off at Skate Canada in front of friends and family.’’

Daleman, 24, is looking to regain the magic that earned her a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships and put her on the 2018 Olympic team. ‘’It’s really cool,’’ she said about her flawless performance. ‘’I came in here with little goals and I’m feeling very prepared. If I’m not ready now I don’t know when I ever will be.’’

‘’It was a really excellent start to our season,’’ said Poirier, seventh at the Olympics with Gilles this past winter. ‘’To have a competition at home with a real audience and all of our friends and family here made today’s skate really special.’’

Two other Canadian couples are in the medal hunt, with Marjorie Lajoie of Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha of St-Hubert, Que., placing fourth at 75.94, while Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain le Gac of Ste-Anne-des-Plaines, Que., are fifth at 74.59.

The Skating World Converges in Mississauga for Skate Canada International

OTTAWA, ON (October 24, 2022) – After a successful weekend at Skate America that saw Canadians win three medals, the ISU Grand Prix series stops in Mississauga, Ontario this week for the 48th edition of Skate Canada International. From October 28-30, some of the best skaters from around the globe will compete for a spot on the podium at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre, including Shoma Uno, Young You, Lilah Fear, Lewis Gibson, Riku Miura, Ryuichi Kihara, plus fifteen of Canada’s top talents.

The men’s team, which will count three entries, will be headlined by veteran and two-time Olympian Keegan Messing. Messing is the current Canadian champion and has gotten off to a stunning start this season, winning gold at the Nebelhorn Trophy. He will be joined by Conrad Orzel, who recently placed 11th at the Finlandia Trophy, as well as Stephen Gogolev, who finished 9th at the U.S. International Figure Skating Classic.

Olympians Madeline Schizas and Gabrielle Daleman will represent Canada in the women’s field. Schizas, the 2022 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships women’s gold medallist, kicked off the competition season with a 5th place at the Nebelhorn Trophy. Teammate Gabrielle Daleman will be competing at her first international event after an excellent domestic season that saw her win gold at the 2022 Skate Canada Challenge and bronze at the 2022 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships.

In the pair discipline, Canada will be sending two young but solid teams, with Brooke McIntosh and Benjamin Mimar setting their sights on the top step of the podium. The pair, who finished third at the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships last season, had a breakthrough start to their first senior season, winning bronze at the 2022 Finlandia Trophy earlier this month. Kelly Ann Laurin and Loucas Éthier will also be competing in the event after winning bronze over the weekend at Skate America.

Canada will boast three Olympic teams in ice dance. 2021 Skate Canada International gold medallists Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier will be looking to defend their title after a successful 2021-2022 season that saw the pair claim the Canadian title. Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha will also be strong contenders for the title, with the team winning two gold medals this year at the Ondre Nepela Memorial and Budapest Trophy. Finally, Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain Le Gac , who claimed bronze at Skate America, will be replacing Miku Makita and Tyler Gunara due to injury.

Competition starts on Friday, October 28 with every discipline performing their short program/rhythm dance. All medals will be awarded on Saturday, October 29, as all disciplines will perform their free program/free dance. The event concludes on Sunday with the exhibition gala. The event will be live streamed in Canada via skatecanada.ca.

NORWOOD, USA (October 23, 2022) – Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain Le Gac of Ste-Anne-des-Plaines, Que., won the bronze medal in ice dancing Sunday to conclude Skate America, the opening stop on ISU Grand Prix figure skating circuit. This marked the first international medal for the married couple since they decided to skate for Canada internationally in June 2021.

Two-time world championship silver medallists Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the U.S. held on to top spot with 202.80 points. Their compatriots Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker won the free dance but stayed second at 202.07. ‘’We’ve been working a long time for this,’’ said Lauriault, 25, born in Laval, Que. ‘’It was a dream we’ve had for a long time. Now that we’ve reached this goal it opens the door to many more dreams we’d like to see come true.’’

Carolane Soucisse of Chateauguay, Que., and Shane Firus of North Vancouver were eighth.

Canada ends the competition with a silver and two bronze. On Saturday, Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps of Vaudreuil, Que., were second in pairs followed by Kelly Ann Laurin of St-Jérome, Que., and Loucas Éthier of Deux-Montagnes, Que., in third. For full results, click here.

Canada Opens ISU Grand Prix Season With Two Medals in Pairs

NORWOOD, USA (October 23, 2022) – Canada opened the ISU Grand Prix figure skating season with two medals in pairs on Saturday at Skate America.

Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps of Vaudreuil, Que., took the silver with a personal international best 197.89 points, less than four points behind the winners Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier of the U.S. This result was also five points better than their score last month when they claimed gold at the Nebelhorn Trophy ISU Challenger Series event.

It was a first senior Grand Prix medal for Stellato-Dudek 22 years after her Grand Prix debut as a singles skater. Stellato, 39, who retired from singles skating at age 17 due to hip injuries, came back in pairs in 2016.

‘’We wanted to improve our score and also improve some of the levels from the previous event,’’ said Stellato-Dudek. ‘’Right after Four Continents was over, we made a plan for the full six months until we competed again, and I think that’s the difference everyone is seeing.’’

Kelly Ann Laurin and Loucas Éthier won the bronze totalling 156.94, also a personal international high, in the eight-team field.

‘’We are super happy as we had no expectations here,’’ said Éthier. ‘’We were motivated by our performance in the short program. We had an opportunity and we capitalized on it and showed our potential.’’

World junior champion Ilia Malinin of the U.S. took the gold in men’s competition with 280.37 after placing fourth in the short. The 17-year-old is the youngest ever men’s champion at the event. He landed the quad Axel for the second time this season, the only skater to ever successfully land the jump. Kao Miura of Japan won the silver with 273.19 and Junhwan Cha of South Korea was third at 264.05. Roman Sadovsky of Vaughan, Ont., tallied a season’s best 225.41 for fifth and 17-year-old Wesley Chiu of Vancouver followed in sixth at 219.90.

‘’Overall, it was an improvement from my last competition,’’ said Sadovsky, who was third at the Nebelhorn Trophy. ‘’There were some things that were still better at Nebelhorn, and I hope to improve on those at my next event.’’

Competition ends Sunday with the women’s free skate and the free dance. Marie-Jade Lauriault of Ste-Anne-des-Plaines, Que., and Romain Le Gac of Laval, Que., are third after Saturday’s rhythm dance. For full results, click here.

Ten Prominent Canadian Skaters Kick Off the Senior Grand Prix Season at Skate America

OTTAWA, ON (October 17, 2022) – The senior Grand Prix season officially kicks off this weekend with Skate America, where ten Canadian skaters will be vying for a spot on the podium. The event, which takes place in Norwood, USA from October 21-23, 2022, will include two Canadian entries in men, pair and ice dance.

17-year-old Wesley Chiu will be making his Senior Grand Prix debut after winning gold and bronze medals on the junior circuit last season, on top of placing third at the 2022 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. He will be joined by Olympian Roman Sadovsky, who has had a successful season so far, claiming bronze at the 2022 Nebelhorn Trophy in Oberstdorf, Germany.

Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps kicked off their season in spectacular fashion with a first-place finish at the 2022 Nebelhorn Trophy. The duo also had a great showing at last year’s ISU Four Continents Championships®, where they finished just off the podium. Young pair team Kelly Ann Laurin and Loucas Ethier earned their spot at Skate America with a very solid performance at the U.S. International Figure Skating Classic, where they placed fifth.

Veteran ice dancers Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain Le Gac, who finished fourth at the U.S. International Figure Skating Classic a few weeks ago, will be competing in ice dance, as will teammates Carolane Soucisse and Shane Firus. Soucisse and Firus put on a great display at the 2022 Nebelhorn Trophy, where they captured a bronze medal for Canada.

The competition starts on Friday, October 21 with the pair and men’s short programs. On Saturday, all disciplines will compete, starting with the rhythm dance, followed by the women’s short program, and the pair and men’s free programs. The event concludes on Sunday with the free dance and women’s free program.

Lajoie and Lagha earn second gold this season on ISU Challenger Series

BUDAPEST – Canadian ice dancers Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha connected for gold for the second time this season on Sunday with a victory at the sixth stop on the ISU Challenger Series figure skating circuit.

The 2019 world junior champions cracked the 200-point barrier for the first time on international ice totaling 202.40 points placing first in both the rhythm dance and free dance.

It bettered the 193.35 score they earned in their victory two weeks ago at a Challenger Series event in Czechia. It’s also the third straight Challenger Series event Canada has won gold. Last week in Finland, Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Nikolaj Soerensen of Montreal were first.

As was the case in their previous win Lajoie, from Boucherville, Que., and Lagha, from St-Hubert, Que., weren’t totally satisfied.

‘’The free dance was a little bit too safe,’’ said Lagha, who’ll compete with his partner at Skate Canada International in two weeks. ‘’But it’s OK. Now we go home, work and get the job done again.’’

Evgeniia Lopareva and Geoffrey Brissaud of France were second at 192.85 and Katarina Wolfkostin and Jeffrey Chen of the U.S. were third at 180.46.

Alicia Fabbri of Terrebonne, Que., and Paul Ayer of Calgary took fourth spot with 168.85 in their international season debut. There were 15 entries.

‘’We put out a really strong performance in the rhythm dance and connected with the crowd,’’ said Ayer. ‘’We had an unfortunate mistake in our free dance but before and after that it was solid.’’

The two ice dance teams were the only Canadian entries at the competition.

The Challenger Series provides opportunities for senior skaters to compete at an international level and earn world ranking points.

Two top-five finishes for Canada at ISU Junior Grand Prix

EGNA, Italy – Aleksa Rakic of Burnaby, B.C., took fifth spot in the men’s competition on Saturday while ice dancers Sandrine Gauthier of St-Constant, Que., and Quentin Thieren of Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Que., were also fifth at the seventh stop on the ISU Junior Grand Prix figure skating circuit.

In men’s competition, Lucas Broussard of the U.S. earned his second victory this season with 211.14 points. He edged Japan’s Shunsuke Nakamura second at 211.01 while his compatriot Takeru Amine Kataise was third at 201.35.

Rakic, 18, improved on his seventh place at the JGP stop in Czechia last month scoring 197.56. He posted a personal best international score for his short program on Thursday with 71.50.

Canada had two entries in ice dancing with Gauthier and Thieren totalling 144.05 and Marianne Hubert of Trois-Rivieres, Que., and William Odson of Calgary placing 10th with 130.70.

Katerina Mrazkova and Daniel Mrazek of Czechia won the gold with 173.00. Hannah Lim and Ye Quan of South Korea were second at 158.25 and Leah Neset and Artem Markelov of the U.S. third at 156.36.

Gauthier and Thieren won the silver medal last month at the Junior Grand Prix stop in Riga and were hoping to reach the podium again to qualify for the Grand Prix Final in December.

‘’There are things we need to work on but for the fitness, performance and interpretation we saw an improvement on our last showing,’’ said Gauthier. ‘’It’s our first year on the circuit so the Final wasn’t our goal but it would have been a bonus to go.’’

Hana Yoshida of Japan also won her second Junior Grand Prix event placing first in women’s competition. Rose Théroux of Ste-Victoire-de-Sorel, Que., was 14th out of 44 entries.
