Skate Canada names teams for 2017 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships

CALGARY, AB: Skate Canada has selected the teams that will represent Canada at the 2017 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships and 2017 ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships.

Over the weekend, Nexxice, from the Burlington Skating Centre, and Les Suprêmes, from the CPA Saint-Léonard, earned their entries to the senior world championships, winning gold and silver respectively at 2017 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships in Calgary, Alta.

The two senior teams will travel to Colorado Springs, USA, to compete at the 2017 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships, from April 7-8, 2017. This will be the 18th edition of the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships with Canada having won medals at 11 of those previous events.

The entries for the 2017 ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships were determined at Skate Canada Central Ontario’s annual Winterfest competition. Nexxice (junior), of the Burlington Skating Centre and Les Suprêmes (junior) from CPA Saint-Léonard earned the two entries for Canada.

Nexxice and Les Suprêmes will have home country advantage as Canada hosts the 2017 ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships for the first time. The event will be hosted in Mississauga, Ont., from March 10-11, 2017.

The ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships was a biennial event but it was recently decided at the 2016 ISU Congress that the event will become annual beginning in 2017. The inaugural event was hosted in 2013 by Helsinki, Finland. In 2015, Team Canada (Les Suprêmes) won the nation’s first medal at the championships, a bronze.

Nexxice collects third crown, Les Suprêmes triumph twice at 2017 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships

CALGARY – Nexxice from Burlington, Ont., collected its third national title of the week on Sunday while Les Suprêmes from St-Léonard, Que., triumphed twice at the 2017 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships.

In the senior competition, Nexxice tabulated 205.60 points with Les Suprêmes second at 190.64 and NOVA from Brossard, Que., third at 168.88.

“We went out there today, we had a job to do and we’re very proud of our performance,’’ said Nexxice team captain Kiersten Tietz.

Now Nexxice prepare for the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships April 7-8 in Colorado Springs.

“We just want to continue on the path we’re on and stay focused as a team,’’ said Tietz. “We want to use the vehicles that our coaches have given us and continue to improve.”

Les Suprêmes took the junior and novice titles.

In junior competition, Les Suprêmes won the gold medal with 170.60. Nexxice was second at 168.58 and les Pirouettes from Laval, Que., third at 146.38.

‘’We feel great,’’ said Alessia Arsenault of Les Suprêmes. ‘’We worked so hard. Our task was to do just the same things we do in practice, to skate clean and do like we always do. That’s what we did today.’’

The ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships are set for March 10-11 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.

‘’We’re super excited for the world juniors,’’ said Arsenault. ‘’It’s going to be great to have the home crowd.’’

In the novice final standings, Les Suprêmes earned 109.41, les Pirouettes 108.72 and NOVA from Brossard, Que., 106.55.

On Saturday, Nexxice won the open and intermediate competitions.

Nexxice notch gold in first two finals at 2017 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships

CALGARY – Nexxice from Burlington, Ont., won the open and intermediate competitions on Saturday at the 2017 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships being held this week at the WinSport’s Markin MacPhail Centre

In the open event, Nexxice finished with 157.69 points. Les Supremes from St-Léonard, Que., were second at 132.61 edging les Pirouettes from Laval, Que., in third at 132.00. There were nine entries.

‘’This is just amazing we’ve worked so hard this season and we absolutely love our program,’’ said Nexxice skater Lauren Zbucki. ‘’It’s a dream come true for us.’’

In the open competition, each team performed their free program twice.

‘’We had a few little hiccups in the program yesterday,’’ added Zbucki. ‘’But we came back really strong today. We left it all on the ice. It was pure passion, pure strength, pure joy. We all had tears in our eyes, smiles on our faces and didn’t want to get off the ice.’’

In the intermediate competition, Nexxice took the crown with 120.53. The Ilderton (Ont.) Silver Jets from were second at 116.87 and NOVA from Brossard, Que., were third at 105.78. There were 15 entries.

‘’It was absolutely amazing,’’ said Grace Hefley of Nexxice. ‘’We stepped out there today knowing exactly what we needed to do. We just went out there with a lot of confidence and executed like we did in practice.’’

Competition ends Sunday with the free skates in novice, junior and senior competition. Action starts at 1 p.m. local time.

Nexxice synchronized skating team in Scotland for Trophy D’Ecosse

OTTAWA, ON:  Canada will have one team competing at the seventh annual Trophy D’Ecosse in Dumfries, Scotland. The international synchronized skating competition takes place from February 10-12, 2017, at the Dumfries Ice Bowl.

Nexxice senior will be the Canadian team at the event. They previously competed at, and won this competition in 2015. Last season, the representatives of the Burlington Skating Centre placed fourth at the ISU Shanghai Trophy, and seventh at the 2016 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships. Last weekend, Nexxice placed fourth at the 2017 French Cup. The 2016 Canadian silver medallists are coached by Shelley Simonton Barnett and Anne Schelter.

Karen Robertson of Chelsea, Que., will be the sole Canadian official at the event.

Canada’s NEXXICE fourth at French Cup

ROUEN, France – NEXXICE from Burlington, Ont., couldn’t gain ground on the leaders in its free skate Saturday and placed fourth at the French Cup synchronized skating competition.

Paradise from Russia was the winner with 199.16 points, the Rockettes from Finland were second at 196.98 and Team Unique, also from Finland, third at 193.76. NEXXICE, fourth after Friday’s short program, followed at 183.72.

There were 13 entries.

The skaters for NEXXICE were Cassandra Black, Madina Asrorova, Nadine Banholzer, Kelly Britten, Sarah Burns, Laura Emery, Ariana Gould-Tasoojy, Celina Hevesi, Emma Kim, Jamie Kosonic, Jenna Mackenzie, Megan MacLellan, Caroline Marr, Courtney McNaughton, Morgan Dykstra Stang, Kiersten Tietz, Alessandra Toso, Victoria Smith, Taylor Walker and Brooklyn Williamson.

Canada’s NEXXICE fourth after short program at French Cup

ROUEN, France – NEXXICE from Burlington, Ont., is in fourth place after Friday’s short program at the French Cup synchronized skating competition.

Team Paradise  from Russia is in first place with 72.68 points, followed by a pair of teams from Finland – Team Unique (69.04) and the Rockettes (67.70). NEXXICE sits fourth at 62.96.

Nexxice synchronized skating team ready to compete at 2017 French Cup

OTTAWA, ON:  Canada will have one team at the 2017 French Cup international synchronized skating competition in Rouen, France. Nexxice senior will compete at the event which takes place from February 3-4, 2017, at the Rouen Ice Rink and features 23 teams in senior, junior, and novice.

Nexxice senior, the 2016 Canadian silver medallists, will be the sole Canadian team at the event. They last competed at this event in 2013, where they placed sixth. Last season, the representatives of the Burlington Skating Centre placed fourth at the ISU Shanghai Trophy, and seventh at the 2016 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships. Nine-time consecutive Canadian champions (from 2007-2015), they are coached by Shelley Simonton Barnett and Anne Schelter.

Jennifer Betts of Bragg Creek, Alta., will be the sole Canadian official at the event.

Skate Canada Announces 2016-2017 National Team

OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada is pleased to announce the 2016-2017 National Team. The team is comprised of 28 senior members, which includes five men, five women, four pair teams and five ice dance teams.

To be named to the National Team a skater must finish in the top five in senior singles, pair and ice dance disciplines at the Canadian Tire National Skating Championships, or be added at the discretion of the Skate Canada. These skaters may be considered to represent Canada at international competitions.

Their appointment to the national team is effective from June 1, 2016 through to April 30, 2017. Skate Canada also announced the three teams that will make up the Skate Canada Synchronized Skating National Team.

Canadian teams fifth and seventh at ISU Synchronized Skating World Championships

BUDAPEST – Les Suprêmes from St-Leonard, Que., and NEXXICE from Burlington, Ont., placed fifth and seventh on Saturday at the ISU Synchronized Skating World Championships.

Russia won the gold medal with 212.69 points followed by Finland for the silver at 207.84 and the U.S. third at 206.95.

Les Suprêmes improved on sixth place finishes at the previous three worlds earning 201.07. They were also fifth after the short program on Friday.

Skating for the Suprêmes were Rebecca Allaire, Katherine Beaucage, Alexandra Bernardo, Lou-Ann Bezeau-Tremblay, Audrey-Anne Blouin, Joannie Brazeau, Emma Maria Corona, Alessandra Criscuolo, Laurie Désilets, Mélodie Doré, Sara Gilbert, Dana Malowany, Agathe Sigrid Merlier, An-Kim Nguyen, Minh-Thu Tina Nguyen, Laura Olivia Sena, Claudia Sforzin, Sofya Squalli, Helene Stojanovski and Yasuko Uchida.

NEXXICE were the defending world champions and silver medallist at the three worlds before that. They dropped from sixth after the short and finished with 196.06 out of 26 entries.

Canadian teams in Hungary for the 2016 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships

OTTAWA, ON: Canada will have two teams competing at the 2016 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships this week from April 7-9, in Budapest, Hungary. Twenty-six teams from 21 ISU member nations will be competing for the world title.

Les Suprêmes, from CPA Saint-Léonard, and Nexxice, from the Burlington Skating Centre, earned their entries to the world championships winning gold and silver respectively at the 2016 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships earlier this season in Waterloo, Ont.

Canadian champions Les Suprêmes are the first Canadian entry. They placed sixth at this event in 2015, 2014 and 2013. This season, they won the silver medal at the Neuchâtel Trophy and placed fourth at the French Cup. The representatives of CPA Saint-Léonard are coached by Marilyn Langlois, assisted by Pascal Denis and Amélie Brochu.

Representing the Burlington Skating Centre are the 2016 Canadian silver medallists, Nexxice. They are the defending world champions, and have previously won the world championships in 2009, won silver from 2012-2014, and won bronze in 2007 and 2008. This season, they placed fourth at the ISU Shanghai Trophy. Nine-time consecutive Canadian champions (from 2007-2015), they are coached by Shelley Simonton Barnett and Anne Schelter.

Karen Robertson of Chelsea, Que., will be the Canadian team leader at the event. Dr. Laura Cruz of Toronto, Ont., and physiotherapist Shirley Kushner, of Westmount, Que., will be the Canadian medical staff onsite. Susan Morriss of Victoria, B.C., will be the sole Canadian official at the event.

Mike Slipchuk, Skate Canada High Performance Director, will also be traveling with the team.

Les Suprêmes champions at 2016 ISU Junior World Challenge Cup

ZAGREB, Croatia – Les Suprêmes from St-Leonard, Que., won the gold medal Saturday at the 2016 ISU Junior World Challenge Cup synchronized skating competition.

The Canadians earned 179.44 points placing first in both the short and long programs. Finland took the silver at 172.91 and Russia was third at 169.93.

The Supremes skaters were Jessica Allaire, Alessia Arsenault, Amélie Béland, Julia Bernardo, Rachel Maria Cecere, Alisia Cirella, Emily Degni, Béatrice Coté Gomes De Oliveira, Marie-Ève Deschesnes, Gabrielle Gauthier-Roy, Marie-Michèle Gauthier-Roy, Kathleen Grandchamps, Alessia Hart-Lewis, Jessisa Giovanna Iacono, Nadia Lemay, Christina Morin, Alexia Nadai-Plante, Andréanne Paradis, Alessia Malissa Polletta and Florence Poulin.

Les Suprêmes lead 2016 ISU Junior World Challenge Cup

The first of two Canadian entries leads with 63.71 points with Russia second at 62.02 and Finland third at 61.11.
