Skate Canada announces bid to host the ISU World Figure Skating Championships ® 2020

OTTAWA, ON: Skate Canada will formally submit a bid in April of 2017 to host the ISU World Figure Skating Championships ® 2020. The International Skating Union (ISU) has confirmed the receipt of Skate Canada’s intent to bid and if successful this will be Canada’s 11th time hosting the championships. Canada last hosted the event in 2013 in London, Ont.

The ISU World Figure Skating Championships ® is an annual event that moves around the globe, attracting more than 150 million television viewers worldwide and showcasing the 200 best athletes from 50 countries in four disciplines: men’s, ladies, pair and ice dance.

“We are thrilled to be in the running to host the ISU World Figure Skating Championships ® 2020. Canada has a strong hosting history and we would be honoured to hold the 2020 event,” said Dan Thompson, CEO, Skate Canada. “We are proud to have held the world championships 10 times previously and we know that if the ISU brings this event back to Canada we will continue our outstanding hosting record while inspiring not only Canadians to embrace the joy of skating, but people around the world.”

Skate Canada is requesting host city proposals for the ISU World Figure Skating Championships® 2020. Skate Canada is focused on acquiring a city host with strong partners across all aspects of the event that will work with Skate Canada to deliver an outstanding championships and inspire Canadians to embrace the joy of skating. Potential candidate cities can find the official RFP information here. A Canadian host city bid will be selected in March 2017.

In accordance with ISU regulations, Skate Canada will submit a host city along with supporting documents in April 2017. The 2020 host will be determined by the ISU Council and a decision is expected in June 2017.
