“We are really excited to be coming into this event as the top-ranked country. Our skaters had a strong showing this season and at the world championships earlier this month. We are really looking to build on that success,” said Mike Slipchuk, Skate Canada Director High Performance. “With the addition of a team event for figure skating at the 2014 Olympics, this event will give a preview of what to expect next year in Sochi, Russia.”
The six-country competition will include teams from China, France, Japan, Russia and the United States of America. Skaters compete in their disciplines with short programs/dance and free skates/dance as usual. After the results, they receive placement points, which are then added together and the team with the highest points total will win the title. Teams will compete for a total of $1 million USD in prize money.
The team leader for the event will be Skate Canada High Performance Director Mike Slipchuk. Agnes Makowski of Toronto, Ont., will also be travelling as Team Canada’s physiotherapist. Debbi Islam of Barrie, Ont., and Leslie Keen of Vancouver, Ont., will be the Canadian officials at the event.
