(June 3, 2008)

The 2008 Skate Canada Annual Convention and General Meeting (ACGM) wrapped up Saturday night after three days of celebrations, workshops and business meetings. The theme of this year’s ACGM was Dream Big. Reach Higher, which set the tone for the weekend.  A national coaches’ conference was held in conjunction with the ACGM and more than 120 coaches from across the country were in Regina to participate in workshops and on-ice sessions.

The opening was held Thursday evening at the RCMP Heritage Centre and delegates had the opportunity to enjoy the Theatre of Champions with Olympic Champions Jamie Salé and David Pelletier and to interact by asking the couple questions.

During the day Friday, delegates attended a number of workshops including delivery of skating programs, marketing and sponsorship, finance and athlete development.

Skate Canada volunteers, coaches, officials and skaters were recognized for their ongoing contribution to figure skating at the 2008 Skate Canada Achievement Awards Gala and Banquet on Friday May 30. Two-time Olympic Silver Medalist Brian Orser and Olympic and World Bronze Medalist in ice dance Tracy Wilson were the hosts for the evening entertaining the crowd with their easy style and rapport.

Several members of Skate Canada’s national team assisted with the award presentations. Prior to the Gala and Banquet, the award winners were the special guests at the President’s Reception, where they mingled with the athletes, sponsors and Skate Canada executive members.

The Billie Mitchell Award, which is named after the first female president of Skate Canada and is presented each year to a member of the Skate Canada Board of Directors for outstanding contribution, was presented to Wayne Sutherland, from Newfoundland/Labrador for his ongoing work in many areas of the organization.
