Ottawa, ON – Norah McCarthy, a previous Canadian Champion currently residing in California, is travelling to the 2008 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships being held in Vancouver. Although a long way to travel, McCarthy, 87, is not going to let the distance stop her from attending an event she competed in over 65 years ago.

McCarthy has had an accomplished past in figure skating. Winning her first Canadian title in 1938 as a junior, McCarthy went on to win the Canadian Senior Ladies title in 1940. In addition to her two singles titles, McCarthy won two consecutive Canadian Senior Pairs titles with partner Ralph McCreath in 1939 and 1940. In 1941, McCarthy placed first in the Ten Step with partner Sandy McKechnie at the Canadian Championships. With this win, she completed her Canadian national gold medal collection and displayed her diverse talent in all disciplines of the sport.

A true Canadian figure skating icon, McCarthy will be able to relive her remarkable achievements this year at nationals as she watches the athletes compete. Her significant contribution and enduring dedication to the sport are truly inspiring.
