2007 Canadian Silver Medalist Chris Mabee and his national teammate Joey Russell were in Mexico City for the opening of a giant ice rink in the Zocalo Main Square on Saturday, December 1. The size of the rink breaks a Guinness record with its 3,200 square meters (80 X 40 mts). The surface can accommodate 1,200 skaters at once and will be open for the general public, completely free of charge, for the next six weeks to test the ice. Skates will even be provided for those who don’t own a pair.
Mabee and Russell took part in the opening show along with Mexico’s national figure skating champions, Ana Cecy Cantu and Luis Hernandez. The event also featured popular music groups, a hockey demonstration, invited speed skaters and other international guests.
