Skate Canada congratulates ice dance skater Michael Coreno for being selected the male recipient for figure skating to receive the BC Premier's Athletic Award for his athletic accomplishments during the 2005/2006 competitive season.
The 2007 Premier's Athletic Awards recognize the top male and female athlete from each provincial sport organization participating in the BC Athlete Assistance Program for the period of November 1, 2005 to October 31, 2006. Each year the BC Premier and the Minister responsible for sport honours the athletes at these awards ceremony, which will be held February 12, 2007. After the ceremonies, the athletes and their guests will be hosted to the Vancouver Board of Trade Countdown to 2010 luncheon.
Michael Coreno and his ice dance partner, Allie Hann-McCurdy, were crowned the 2006 junior ice dance champions last January in Ottawa at the 2006 BMO Financial Group Canadian Championships. Hann-McCurdy and Coreno have been skating together since May 2003 and moved up to the senior level last September.
Michael belongs to the Vancouver Skating Club in British Columbia and trains at the BC Centre of Excellence. He started skating when he was seven and tried all the disciplines in skating before deciding to concentrate on dance.
