It was a weekend that won’t soon be forgotten for the 15 Canadian adult skaters who competed at the 2006 International Adult Figure Skating Competition.
This is the second year the competition has taken place. This year’s event was held June 1-3 in Oberstdorf, Germany.
Canadian adult skaters fared well in the event. Out of the 16 Canadian entries in the competition, a total of seven medals were won, including double gold for Manotick, Ont.’s Jan Calnan, who stepped onto the top of the podium in both the masters ladies free skating II and masters pair categories.
Montreal’s Stephane Vachon also took home two gold medals, capturing gold in the masters men free skating II/III event and teaming up with Calnan for gold in the masters pair event.
Other medallists included Jeffrey Bullard (bronze – silver men free skating III/IV), Sandra Blitz (bronze – silver ladies free skating I), Gloria Purvey (silver – silver ladies free skating III) and Diana Barkeley and Geoff Squires (bronze – ice dancing original dance).
Also delivering strong performances at the event were John Hall (fourth-place – gold men free skating I), Denis La Rochelle (sixth-place – silver men free skating III/IV), Angela Justason (sixth-place – gold ladies free skating I), Cathy McLean (sixth-place – gold ladies free skating II), Michelle Lamothe (fifth-place – silver ladies free skating III), Barbara Cowl (ninth-place – bronze ladies free skating II), Raye Ryan (ninth-place bronze ladies free skating III), Marie Boutin (13th-place bronze ladies free skating III) and Diana Barkeley and Geoff Squires, who, in addition to their bronze medal in the ice dancing original dance event, placed fifth in the ice dancing gold compulsory dance.
Skate Canada congratulates all of the adult skaters on their accomplishments in Oberstdorf.
