(November 25, 2009) – The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay is on a 106-day journey across Canada, with over 12,000 Canadians having the chance to carry the torch. Thirteen former figure skaters will get carry the torch as it makes its way across the country.

The relay began on October 30, 2009 when the torch arrived in Victoria, British Columbia and it has been traveling throughout the country ever since. From now until February we will profile each of the 13 torchbearers representing Canadian figure skating.

The bearers will be decked out in the official torchbearer uniform and will travel along the official route.

Eric Gillies, the 1977 Canadian Ice Dance Champion with partner Susan Carcallen, will be the first figure skater to handle the torch. Gillies competed at the 1976 Olympics with Carscallen and placed 13th. The world class ice dancer would later go on to become a world class coach. He coached pair team Isabelle Brasseur and Lloyd Eisler to five Canadian titles, an Olympic bronze medal, three world silver medals and a world championship title. On November 25, 2009 he will carry the torch in his home province of New Brunswick in the community of Oromocto.
