(November 19, 2008) – Flipping a coin is about to become a lot more exciting as figure skating becomes the next sport to be featured on a 2010 commemorative coin from the Royal Canadian Mint. The coin is designed by Canadian artist Glenn Green of Vancouver, B.C. and depicts a pair of figure skaters in the centre, a stylized maple leaf and the words ‘Vancouver 2010’.
“Canada has a very proud history in Olympic figure skating and the Mint is delighted to feature this popular winter sport in our extensive coin program,” said Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint.
Up to 22 million 25-cent figure skating coins will enter into circulation and if you’re lucky, one might eventually end up in your pocket with your other change! If you’re itching to add this special coin to your collection, stop by a RBC branch or Petro Canada gas station starting November 18th.
As we look forward to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, collector’s items like these coins will only strengthen the support we show our athletes. Canadians from coast to coast can share in the pride by collecting and saving these special Canadian figure skating coins.
