The 2008 BMO Skate Canada Sectional Championships took place across the country over the last four weekends and there were several notable and outstanding performances with two new Canadian records set last weekend.
At the Skate Canada-Central Ontario Sectional Championships Edbert Khong of the Toronto Cricket Club scored 36.93 points in the Juvenile Men event. This beat the previous record of 36.71 points set by Peter O’Brien of Skate Canada-Eastern Ontario exactly a year ago to the day. Khong was also the Juvenile Dance Silver Medalist at the 2007 BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals along with his sister Edrea.
At the Skate Canada-Western Ontario Sectional Championships Rylie McCulloch-Casarsa from the Burlington Figure Skating Club scored 105.71 points in the Novice Women’s event. This beat the previous record of 100.93 points set by Kirsten Moore-Towers at the 2007 Canada Winter Games on March 8 of this year.
There was much excitement when the unique situation of the Novice Women’s record was beaten three times the same day. Alexandra Najarro and Alisha Tupchong scored 102.80 points and 101.78 points respectively at the Skate Canada-Central Ontario Sectionals. Meanwhile on the same day at the Skate Canada-Western Ontario Sectionals McCulloch-Casarsa’s had also broken the existing record. Najarro is the current record holder in Pre-Novice Women.
