Not only will competing in the World Junior Figure Skating Championships be a new experience for Signe Ronka, but she will also be sporting a new look when she competes at the Palace of Culture and Sports in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Ronka, who was the bronze medallist in the Junior Ladies event at the 2002 Bank of Montreal Canadian Championships, hit downtown Toronto on Feb. 11 and 12 to experiment with some makeup and try out a new hairdo before leaving for the competition.

To make things even more exciting for the 14-year-old skater, former three-time Canadian Ladies Champion, Josée Chouinard, and Skate Canada National Coach Consultant, Marijane Stong, were Ronka's hair and makeup consultants for the two days.

Ronka had her makeup lesson with Stong on Feb. 11. Ronka says Stong shared some very useful makeup tips with her and gave her a lesson on how to apply certain cosmetics.

"Marijane showed me how to put on eyeliner correctly, and we chose eyeshadow colours I should wear that would best match my programs," said Ronka. "She also showed me the type of blush that would look natural, as well as lipstick and cover-up."

Among Ronka's favourite colours to wear are white eyeshadow and dark red lipstick.

The next day was just as exciting for Ronka, as she and Chouinard went to the Granite Salon, which is conveniently located in the same complex as Ronka's training base, the Granite Club in Toronto.

Ronka's describes her previous hairstyle as "just cut plain straight," but Chouinard suggested she get some layers cut into her hairstyle this time. Ronka took her advice, and now she sports a chic new style complete with stylish layers.

"I love the new hairstyle - it's not too long and not too short," said Ronka. "I can still tie my hair up in a ponytail, but it's much neater now. It was a lot of fun for Josée to come with me because she was the one who suggested the layering."

Ronka says she learned a lot of valuable tips from both Stong and Chouinard, including learning new ways to tie up her hair and leaning how to properly apply her eye makeup for a more natural look.

"It was so much fun!" exclaimed Ronka. "I had a blast with Marijane because she showed me all her makeup and then I had to apply it myself. It turned out really nice.
